Majura Park Childcare Centre in Canberra provides long-day-care services for up to 90 children and has 19 permanent staff members. Founded and operated by military veteran, Natalie Colbert, in 2009, Majura Park Childcare has always been passionate about supporting defence families, particularly as many work at Russell, Campbell Park or Fairbairn. Since opening, the centre has employed two veterans, 14 spouses and three children of veterans.
Majura Park Childcare is successful in hiring military spouses as it specifically advertises for them through Seek and the Defence Community Organisation. The Centre always interviews an applicant who indicates a relationship with the military, including Skype interviews for those living in remote locations, in order to secure employment before posting to Canberra.
The needs of military families are understood and active policies to support flexibility are offered including shorter shifts, adult apprenticeships and training opportunities and flexible leave arrangements for families with exercise or deployment commitments.
