Understanding how to attract veterans to your workforce starts with how job opportunities are presented. The recent Finding veteran talent using SEEK webinar explored how organisations can improve their SEEK profiles and job advertisements to better engage veteran candidates.

Hosted by James Woodhall, National Sales Manager Government, and Seppi Rouzbehi, Customer Service Success Manager from SEEK, the session provided practical insights for employers looking to connect with veteran talent through Australia’s most widely used job platform.

Veterans bring a broad skill-set to workplaces across all industries. Ensuring that job ads are clear, inclusive and focused on capabilities rather than just industry experience can make a significant difference.

‘You can't attract what you're not considering’ explained Seppi Rouzbehi, ‘Starting off with using inclusive language in your recruitment strategies and things such as avoiding industry or company specific acronyms, jargon and technical language’.

James Woodhall highlighted the importance of showcasing an organisation's culture in job listings, ‘We see many organisations include information around their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. This would be a really useful place to include information around your organisation’s commitment, willingness and receptiveness to hiring veterans’.

Take the next step

One way to strengthen your job advertisement is by highlighting that your organisation has joined the Veteran Employment Commitment (VEC). The VEC recognises organisations that actively support veteran employment and provides access to resources that help businesses refine their recruitment and retention efforts.

By implementing practical recruitment strategies, leveraging available resources, and ensuring job opportunities are accessible, employers can build a workforce that benefits from the skills and expertise veterans bring.

Resources from SEEK

To assist organisations in improving their veteran recruitment, SEEK has developed two key resources, one for organisations and one for veteran applicants:

Both resources provide practical tips to bridge the gap between veteran jobseekers and employers looking to hire them.
